Birth of a Brand

Guy Chaddock & Company, a high-end furniture manufacturer, was looking for better facilities after operating in downtown Los Angeles since 1975. Over 90 percent of Guy Chaddock’s employees moved to Bakersfield with the company, and many were able to purchase homes, which they weren’t able to do while living in L.A.

Copy Points

• In 1975, Guy Chaddock opened a one-man woodshop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

• Today, Guy Chaddock & Company has over 200 employees using the company’s original designs and scales to craft one-of-a-kind, hand made reproductions of antique French and English country home furnishings.

• Each piece embodies distinctive styling, old world craftsmanship, and the unique hand distressed finish, which have become the hallmarks of Guy Chaddock & Company products.

• The company continues to be a family-run business: President, Dave Edwards is the nephew of Founder, Guy Chaddock. Dave’s son, Sean, recently joined the company as an Assistant General Manager.

• From Melrose Avenue, the operation moved to four separate buildings in L.A.’s Boyle Heights neighborhood. They needed to expand, and started searching for a new location. The company considered Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, Nevada, Arizona, but these areas didn’t encourage manufacturing, or offer a great quality of life.

• Guy Chaddock & Company moved to Bakersfield in 1996. The City, County and Economic Development agency made sure all the permits went through very quickly, so that they could be operational within 90 days.

• 90 percent of their employees (over 100) moved to Bakersfield with the company. The cost of living is better than in Los Angeles, and since the company didn’t reduce the pay of its employees, many were able to purchase homes that they never would have been able to purchase before.

• Employees have been very happy with the local schools, which have given their children the opportunity to go to college.
